Chapel Window 6—Sermon on the Mount

Welcome back! This week, we will examine Chapel Window 6, The Sermon on the Mount. At the top of the window, we see the continents of the earth, centered on the Atlantic Ocean, representing God’s gathering together of the waters under the sky to allow dry land to appear. Below that, we see Jesus delivering his Sermon on the Mount. This image represents the preaching of Jesus. It serves as a very appropriate choice, as many of the themes of Jesus’ preaching are represented in this Biblical story found in Matthew, chapters 5–7. You can see the crowd gathering to hear Him speak to the lower left. The organ sits in front of this window, so the lower third is a continuation of the colorful background. Scroll over or tap the picture of the window to see an image of the original artist’s design.

“When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.'”
Matthew 5:1–9
