Sanctuary Window 1—The Child—B

Welcome back to Windows Wednesday! Today, we look at the middle panel of Sanctuary Window 1—The Child. In this domestic scene, we see  Jesus as a boy, learning the carpentry trade from Joseph. Mary, in her traditional blue robes, watches on while sewing. According to the gospel of Matthew, after returning from Egypt, the family settled in Nazareth, a time of Jesus’ life not well-documented in the scriptures. The gospel of Luke contains a story of Christ among the Doctors (or scholars) [Luke 2:41–49], which is really the only account of Jesus as a young man. For reference, a similar scene to this is depicted in Chapel Window 3. Scroll over or click the image below to see the artist’s design for the window.

Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them…. And he increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor. Luke 2:51–52
