The Vision of the Beasts

Does it seem that the problems of the world are endless and overwhelming? It certainly seemed so to the first readers of the book of Daniel. They lived during very dark times, when the faithful were persecuted.

In Daniel chapter 7, the prophet Daniel describes a vision in which the evil powers of the world appear as monstrous beasts. We see beastly powers in the world today, such as the Islamic State and related groups. Or we may face problems in our own personal lives that are “beastly” in proportion. How can we find hope in such times?

Daniel’s vision is raised beyond the beasts to see much more: he sees God on the throne over all, and he sees “the Son of Man” coming to save us from evil – a vision that finds its fulfillment in Christ. It may be that the beasts are raging on earth; but a far greater One is in charge! Daniel’s vision invites us to put our trust in the Lord.

What “beasts” in this world cause you the greatest concern? Can you lift your vision with Daniel to see that God reigns above all? When we put our faith in Christ, we can live, no longer in fear, but in the strength of God and the sure hope of God’s promises.
