Giving to Those in Need

Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your land.”

Deuteronomy 15:11

During the time of Advent, it is important to remember that all blessings come from God. Additionally, God calls us to use our blessings to carry out God’s work. From Old Testament to New, it is made very clear by God the importance of giving to those in times of challenge and need within our community. This is a method of serving God that I am particularly passionate about, as the act of giving makes me feel closer to God.

During the season of giving, I came across a Facebook post that presented a challenge. Like a reversed advent calendar, a food item was listed for each day in December, leading up to Christmas Eve. Liking this idea and seeing this as an excellent way to serve and glorify God, I was inspired to create a calendar for the month of December, with each day listing a food item to be added to a donation box. In early January, full or partial food boxes can be returned to the church to be donated to the local food pantry. With food prices raising due to inflation, this is an excellent way to help those in our community for God. Open your hands to those in need with me, and let’s serve the Lord together!

Thought for the Day: God calls me to serve by helping those in my community who are in need.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for providing me with countless blessings. Inspire me to open my hands to my neighbors in times of challenge and instill generosity and grace in my heart. Amen.
